Students of the Month for
the month of August

Dave O. has been selected for Student of the Month for the month of August because of his commitment and contribution to our dojo and Iaido.

How did you find Kenshin Dojo?
I discovered Kenshin Dojo at the Japanese Friendship Garden. You were doing a demo and I was blown away. I went over and talked to Corella Sensei and a month later I joined.

How long have you been doing Iaido and what rank do you hold?
That was 22 months ago.

Do you have a rank in another martial art?
No, I don’t have a rank in any other martial art.

What made you decide to do Iaido?
As soon as I saw Iaido I knew it was what I wanted to do. I’m a perfectionist and that is one of the things that has drawn me to the Japanese culture. It is that dedication to perfection that makes Iaido so appealing to me.

What is the most memorable experience that you've had at the dojo?
My most memorable experience? That’s a tough one. There are so many. The wonderful friendships I have developed, getting my own iaito, learning a new kata, sharing Iaido with other people but I guess it has to be getting my first menjo.

What have you gained by doing Iaido?
The things I have gained from iaido are a greater sense of peace and focus. I’m sure I have better coordination, too.

Have you ever been to Japan?
As yet I have not been to Japan.

Are you involved in any Japanese culture? Language?
I am involved in the Japanese culture with my art. I am a member of the Japanese American Society and I have studied the language for 1 ½ years. I’m currently taking conversational Japanese at Paradise Valley Community College and I meet once a week with my private tutor, Michiyo Letterman.

What is your favorite Japanese dish?
My favorite Japanese dish is any kind of sushi, but especially uni with a quail egg. Now I’m hungry.
